There are several variants of the K-Lite Codec Pack. They range from a small, essential version with only the most common codecs to a large, full-featured edition. Below you’ll find the main differences between the five available versions.
Versions
There are five variants of the K-Lite Codec Pack:
The Basic version includes everything you need to play the most common video file formats such as AVI, MKV, MP4, OGM, and FLV.
The Standard version adds several features, including Media Player Classic – an excellent video player also supporting DVD playback. This pack is recommended for users who want essential codecs with a great player.
The Full version provides more advanced options, including support for various lossless audio formats and VFW/ACM codecs for encoding. It’s ideal for power users and advanced setups.
The Mega version contains everything from the Full edition plus additional DirectShow filters and extra VFW/ACM codecs.
The 64-bit version is designed for use on 64-bit editions of Windows. For the best experience, it’s recommended to install both the 32-bit and 64-bit variants, as most software on 64-bit Windows still runs in 32-bit mode. Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64, for example, use the 32-bit Windows Media Player by default, while Media Center and Windows Explorer are 64-bit applications.
